Vie Pilates on the Gold Coast offers

customised Pilates training for a healthy,

balanced, body and mind.

Joseph Pilates was born in 1880. As a child he suffered from a number of different physical ailments including Rickets, Asthma and Rheumatic fever. Pilates was determined to overcome these health problems and began a lifetime dedication to physical fitness.

During World War I Joseph Pilates was interned in a camp on the Isle Of Man, during this time he began to develop his concept of physical exercise which he called “Contrology”. He defined Contrology as “The comprehensive integration of body, mind and spirit’. After World War I Joseph Pilates immigrated to New York, and on the boat to America he met his future wife Clara, who played an integral role in developing and teaching the Pilates Method. Together they founded the first Pilates studio in New York City in the 1920’s.

Joseph and Clara soon established a devout following, attracting circus performers, dancers, athletes and gymnasts. Pilates continued his life-long mission, developing the Method and inventing Pilates equipment until his death in 1967, age 87. His Pilates equipment was designed to condition the entire body and use positions and movements that simulate functional activities, helping to correct body alignment and balance.

Pilates can be the perfect compliment to cardiovascular exercise, sport, rehab and life. Studio equipment classes are the best way to an improved body, one that performs with strength and agility.

Pilates Reformer and equipment based exercises are a precise, uniquely intelligent form of exercise and body conditioning. Designed to strengthen your core muscles, lengthen your spine and increase your body awareness. Pilates studio equipment classes are a non-aerobic, exercise method which lengthens and strengthens muscles without stressing the joints.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of over 500 controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the total body. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without building bulk. Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region). Pilates is not a gym class or a physiotherapy session..

Is all Pilates the same?

Due to the popularity of Pilates there has been a push for many fitness professionals to offer their own Pilates inspired programmes, and to combine some elements of Pilates with other training regimes, eg: ballet, yoga and cycling. At Vie Pilates the classes are taught using only the authentic Pilates Method which was originally developed by Joseph H Pilates.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

With regular committed Pilates workouts you can expect to:

1. Improve strength, flexibility and balance

2. Tone and build long lean muscles without bulk

3. Challenge deep abdominal muscles to support the core

4. Condition efficient patterns of movement making the body less prone to injury

5. Reduce stress, relieve tension, boost energy

6. Promote recovery from strain and injury

7. Heighten neuromuscular coordination

8. Offer relief from back pain and joint stress

9. Compliment sports training and develop functional fitness for daily life

10. Improve the way your body looks and feels

Will I lose weight in Pilates?

Pilates is not a cardiovascular workout and burning calories is not its main focus. However, in conjunction with a sensible diet and some cardio work Pilates can be a huge factor in a weight loss program. Pilates exercises help to strengthen, sculpt and tone the body whilst building long, lean muscles. You will look and feel better through continued Pilates practice.

How often should I do Pilates?

Try to work out 2-3 times a week, taking a day off in between to rest or enjoy some kind of cardiovascular activity. This kind of regular, consistent practice will help you make the mind-body connection and integrate the various Pilates principles. You should start seeing and feeling results in about 10-15 sessions.
